Carbon monoxide: a highly promising molecule in the fight against obesity! A study published in Redox Biology!

Roberta FORESTI and Roberto MOTTERLINI’s group in the IMRB’s GHALEH team has developed a compound that releases CO into the body at a controlled dose and protects mice from obesity. After ingestion, it limits the animals’ weight gain and the metabolic disorders associated with a fatty diet.

Using experiments conducted with the compound they have developed (CORM-401), the team has shown that in mice, the beneficial effects of CO in combating the damaging effects of obesity are achieved, at least in part, by rebalancing the intestinal microbiota. The compound is still being developed before it can be evaluated in humans, and the team must continue its studies on other models.
