Significant increase in psychiatric consultations during peaks of high heat and pollution – A study conducted at the IMRB!
A recent study conducted at the IMRB by Stéphane JAMAIN and Baptiste PIGNON, from the Translational Neuropsychiatry team, shows a significant increase in psychiatric consultations during periods of extreme heat. “Researchers have observed a 9.7% increase in consultations for psychiatric disorders in emergency departments during heat waves,” explains Stéphane JAMAIN.
To explain this phenomenon, scientists suggest that fine particles emitted by transport, pesticides, and the chemical industry may be responsible. “By passing into the brain via the bloodstream, these particles alter the cells around the neurons,” adds Baptiste PIGNON – Le Parisien, October 9, 2025.
